week 13 - post stay-ca

well...it's mesh monday, post stay-cation. i have to say that i am excited to get back into the swing of my 'real world' schedule. as much as my stay-cation was a breathe of fresh air, there are always more things to accomplish than a week off can accommodate. after purging through our storage cage in the basement of our building; having a family garage sale; re-working the inteiors of our condo/mesh headquarters; catching up with long lost friends (shout out to kelly and kathboat); a day at the beach; a day at the blow-up pool in my niece's back yard; my 28th birthday; my 2nd wedding anniversary; AND my best friend's 30th birthday party, i still felt like there was more to enjoy and finalize during my week off of work.

so, week 1 post stay-ca = multi-tasking! beyond a hectic week back at work, we have a big mesh week with a home | show in the herman miller showroom (thanks to alli), as well as prep for our knoll home | show next week. shout out to all of our ladies at the mart, who are always up for a bit more mesh in their lives.

our pieces have taken a completely new vibe for summer. our colors are bright and cheerful, and our styles are full of ribbon and trinkets that add a much needed splash of energy to any neutral ensamble. here's to making a splash this summer with mesh!

week 12 - trinkets and treasures

everywhere i go i always have my eye out for anything i can put on a necklace. who says just beads go on necklaces? that’s crazy! does one type of topping go on ice cream? of course not. this is what makes us mesh! collectors of all trinkets and treasures…reviving them from their old life, into new pieces of art.

melissa and i created mesh during a brunch discussion at The Breakfast Club near my house. right between bites of french toast and crispy bacon, there it was...mesh was born. we quickly headed straight over to our favorite neighborhood salvage shop (http://www.salvageone.com/) to pick up a few trinkets. we found tons of old pieces of door hardware, hinges and keys to use on our necklaces. since then we started collecting all sorts of items…earrings from grandma’s jewelry box, keys from the sheds on my uncle's farm and broaches from the flea market.

over the last five years…these are the pieces that don’t stay in our possession very long. the combination of old and new, soft and hard, shiny and aged…that’s what people like. there is a story behind each piece. who’s door did this come off of? and just how many layers of paint are really on here?

just this morning i found a vendor on line that is sending me vintage watch faces. SENSATIONAL! look out for the next round of mesh pieces sporting these trinkets! this is what makes our pieces one-of-a-kind treasures.

week 11 - day job

i am always invigorated when i come to the realization that i am accomplishing great things at my day job. more often than not, i feel as though i am simply going through the motions as I head out in the morning to my interior design job…get done what needs to get done…and then go home at some point in the evening. i rarely step back and think about what i am really doing in those 9+ hours away from my husband and home. it is amazing how much time we spend working in our lives, and really don’t think about what we are getting out of our occupations. this is part of the reason we started mesh...we needed something outside of the day to day grind to remind us how creative we were!

recently, my day job brought me a much needed additional release of creative juices. my co-worker nici (shout out again) and i have just finished up a high design project (if we do say so ourselves) that has helped revive our creativity at our day job. we are realizing now how lucky we have been to get the opportunity to showcase our creativity through the interiors we are designing. why not make something of EVERYTHING we touch...it's all in the details!

there is so much creativity to be had by everyone...day job or side job, create something new today (and tomorrow...and maybe the next day...)!

week 10 - small town america

i love chicago. summer fireworks, the new wing at the art institute, pizza art cafĂ© in lincoln square, my neighborhood’s energy during the blackhawks finals….there is so much to soak in. but, every now and again, I like to escape to something a little closer to my roots…to small town america.

i grew up in a midwest town with one stoplight…that just blinked red. this weekend, my husband surprised me and planned an escape to a similarly small town. we took a trip to galena, illinois (population 3,400).

it was nice to be in small town america on memorial day weekend. somehow, the american flags seemed brighter and the clouds looked fluffier.

galena felt very familiar to my upbringing…surrounded by farms, banana bread that was exactly like my grandma’s, and coffee that just isn’t the starbucks i’ve become addicted to. however, it is also very different than my home town… as it is so rich in history, hosting ulysses s. grant’s home and the oldest operating hotel in Illinois. (which is where we stayed!) the shopping was fun…I think we strolled through every boutique on main street... there had to have been hundreds. despite being ultra relaxed, I was wondering…”how does mesh break into the galena scene?”

our best meal was at the perry street brasserie. i really thought i was in chicago. the food was beautifully displayed and was perfectly prepared. It was really a highlight of our trip.

i left galena feeling i had been on a journey far, far away. I would recommend it to anyone trying to get out of the city for a little relaxation and revival.

week 9 - inspired by travel

sherry and i have both traveled to amazingly beautiful cities around the world, and we have been determined to bring our favorite aspects of these cities to our mesh creations. you will find trinkets from greece and beads from rome on our one-of-a-kind necklaces. you will also find photos from my honeymoon to barcelona on our collection of graphic t-shirts*. we also have a friend (shout out to richard) that inspires us by taking photos of beadshops and jewelry he finds while wandering around his hometown of london. we are always intrigued with the styles and color trends that can be found in different corners of the world.

*photo taken of a street performer on the streets of barcelona...don't worry, he's wearing a helmet!...find this photo in a graphic format on our travel collection ts.

in every city we visit, we are determined to find more unique items than we found on our last trip. our finds keep us current with trends that are happening all over the world. keep you eyes peeled for our latest and greatest travel inspriations!

week 8 - oceans

one tuesday, a couple months ago, melissa sent me a starbucks quote off the back of her morning chai tea. the timing was perfect as the night before (on a standard monday mesh night) i was whining about my repetitive 9-5 job and vocalizing a desire for more flexibility in my schedule and a more rewarding feeling at the end of the day.

the quote was something like… "if you don’t take your foot off the edge of the shore, you’ll never swim in the oceans”…

the typical me would have rolled my eyes and thought this was pretty sappy…but not this time. what it said to me was…make the change now! i listen to melissa’s advice. It is to the poignant and direct. she is typically right too.

i did it! so, here I am with one brand new career that i am passionate about, more time for mesh
creativity and no commute on chicago’s eisenhower. i accepted a full time position with a not-for-profit that I had been volunteering with for the last four years. one of our focus areas is orphan care and the fight against child trafficking in India. i have fallen in love with the country and especially my girls at the orphanage, after traveling there the last few years.

so i’ve found that perfect combination….the flexibility and the passion! and no, I am not sitting home eating bon-bons (you know who you are accusing me of this…)…it’s a full time position and I have tons to do!!

leaving the interior design industry was a little scary at the time, but now I get my creative ‘fix’ from mesh…so it’s a perfect fit!

as frightening as it is to take your foot off the edge of the shore…speaking from experience… it feels good in the ocean!
